Linux and open source offers and abundance of very high quality solutions. These solutions are standards based and evolving at a frantic pace. Many of these solutions are either at par and often better than many of the most popular commercial counterparts.
Please find below some of the areas that we have identified as possibilities and have developed solutions for migration to open source.
Networking and the Internet
With the emergence of Internet as the number one communication media, it is imperative that any progressive company should try to integrate this vast resource into their network. Along with opening up vast avenues of possibilities, this resource also brings with it many issues, which will need to be handled delicately. Some of the issues to be addressed are
- Routing and Gateways
- Security and Firewall
- Authentication and control
- Traffic flow monitoring, analysis and shaping
Communication servers
Communication is the cornerstone of any modern enterprise. An efficient and modern communication can do wonders to any business. At the same time a centralized control and routing of the communication is very much essential to make the best use of the infrastructure.
- Email server
- Fax server
- Proxy server
- Multiple client interface protocols(POP/IMAP)
- Web client
- Web server
File servers
The data on the network can be considered as the biggest asset of any company. As the company grows, so do these assets. A fractured management of these assets can be very difficult to mange and suicidal.
A proper file management system where the files are kept central and the access to this resource controlled is very important. Moreover as the centrally maintained data can be accessed from any node, the resource utilization in terms of the no of nodes can be optimized. It is very easy to implement a backup for the central data and hence reduce disruption to the company operation.
- Centralized file storage.
- Security and backup
- Resource sharing and optimization
Database servers
Database servers provide the essential back-end for any enterprise to develop their enterprise and intranet applications on. Over the past couple of years Linux has emerged as the choice platform for most of the industry standard RDBMs. Vendors like Oracle are promoting Linux as their choice platform.
There are also very good, mature and standards based sql servers like Mysql and Pgsql in the Opensource platform.
We have the expertise to plan and implement any of the enterprise databases on Linux platform for better stability, performance and TOC.
Application servers
Applications that run on the network take care of the information management and analysis. The applications will have to be carefully evaluated and implemented and should enhance the operational efficiency of one or more departments in the company. Some of the possible areas to be considered are
- Accounting & MIS
- CRM/ERP
- Intranet applications
- Work and document flow.
Virus protection (gateway and nodes)
Along with the progress of IT comes it's bad side also, in the form of malicious codes and applications (viruses) which affect the Systems running on Windows operating systems. These if not managed properly can bring your entire IT infrastructure to it's knees within a short time. You network should be designed and maintained with protection against these potential threat.
All the possible entry points (central gateway an nodes) of these should be monitored and protected to secure your network.
Desktop workstations
The Linux desktop has been maturing at a great pace, over the past year and is now at a level where it can outperform the other common choices for any type of desktop applications. It not only saves money, but is also feature packed, stable and has great looks. There is a wide range of common applications now available to do any type of tasks that an office computer is used for. Apart from the general office productivity tools the Linux desktop offers additional functionalities like the ability to print any document to a pdf format, printer sharing with windows and Linux desktops, freedom from the annoying disruptions caused by viruses and better security.
Thin client workstations
Embedded Linux capable of booting from flash ROMs and connecting to windows 2000, Citrix and X-windows systems as a thin client. As the thin clients work directly off the server there is no requirement for any devices connected locally. Apart from the initial cost savings during deployment, there will be savings on maintenance and software management across the network.
Embedded systems and solutions
Because of the availability of source code and the ability to achieve very small foot-print, Linux is the choice for any embedded system operating systems. We are developing embedded Linux solutions for many networking applications. These include firewalls and network bandwidth monitoring systems.
